Oilfield services company fined nearly $340,000 for failing to record worker injuries and illnesses

OSHA issued $337,500 in fines to Superior Energy Services Inc. and five subsidiary companies, citing them with 38 violations of the OSHA recordkeeping standard. OSHA inspectors found that the parent corporation, a New Orleans-based provider of oil and gas field services and labor, allowed its subsidiaries to willfully disregard requirements to record employees' work-related injuries and illnesses in the OSHA 300log. Together, the violations cited include 187 instances of improperly recording or failing to record information in the OSHA log.

New OSHA Standard - Crane and Rigging Safety

On 11/9/10 OSHA published a historic new standard that addresses the use of cranes and derricks in construction, replacing the decades old standard. Due to the number of fatalities associated with the use of cranes and derricks in construction, and the technological advances in equipment since the 1971 publication of the old rule, OSHA issued this new standard.

This new standard will comprehensively address key hazards related to cranes and derricks on construction worksites, including the four main causes of worker death and injury: electrocution, crushed by parts of the equipment, struck-by the equipment/load, and falls.

Significant requirements in this new rule include: a pre-erection inspection of tower crane parts; use of synthetic slings in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions during assembly/disassembly work; assessment of ground conditions; qualification or certification of crane operators; and procedures for working in the vicinity of power lines.
